Chaos broke out within the Allahabad district court today after a policeman reportedly gunned down an advocate there.
SI goes rogue
As per video footage, SI Shailendra Singh shot advocate Nabi Ahmed after a brief argument near the parking lot. This incident occurred during the lunch break. Ahmed died shortly afterwards, of his injuries. SI Singh is currently absconding. He was posted in Nari Bari under Shankargarh police station.
Events spiral out of control
Advocates got enraged upon hearing of Singh’s escape and went on a spree of vandalism.
Government vehicles were torched, and stones were hurled at offices. Violence also occurred in the nearby High Court(which is located five kilometers away), with four government vehicles being torched there.
Violence subsides
The agitating lawyers calmed down only once a group of judges had spoken to them, urging restraint .
By 5 pm, violence had subsided. According to the Additional Superintendent of Police(Crime),Arun Kumar Pandey, a constable, Ajay Nagar, was also seriously injured in these clashes, reportedly after being shot at by the advocates. However, Mr Pandey also admitted that the police had to resort to firing in the air to bring the situation under control.
Reactions from the legal community
The Uttar Pradesh Bar Council, condemned the incident and demanded that SI Singh be arrested immediately. They also announced a state-wide strike. The High Court Bar Association expressed solidarity with the Council and blamed the district administration for letting the situation spiral out of control. Advocates in the adjoining districts of Pratapgarh, Ghazipur and Varanasi also pitched in with protests.
